The Grandstand, Cartmel

The Grandstand, Cartmel

New Grandstand, Cartmel Park – Client:  Cartmel Steeplechases (Holker) Limited.

The practice won a competition to design a new grandstand to replace the very tired building which provided poor amenities for the owners, trainers, jockeys, judges, punters, guests, managers and staff for the famous Carmel Race meetings.

The park is one of several important green spaces in the conservation area and stands between the rich grain of historic buildings in the village and the woodland climbing up the valley side towards the fell tops of Howbarrow.

The design  philosophy was to create a modern building reflecting the solid character and heritage of the village on the Eastern elevations with the West elevation open and transparent, providing guests in the Hospitality Suite with good views over the course and for punters to have elevated views of the racing from the steppings.

The roof is finished with Burlington slates laid in random widths and diminishing courses and the walls faced in local random rubble stone or stained weather boarding.
