Stricklandgate House, Kendal

Stricklandgate House, Kendal

Repairs to external fabric

Project value: £360,000
Client: The Trustees of Stricklandgate House

Grant aided by the Heritage Lottery Fund this project was to repair the grade 2 listed building in the centre of Kendal.  The main house was re-roofed and its rendered front elevation was repaired using lime stucco.  Windows were repaired and the frontage stripped of over thirty layers of paint before it was redecorated using mineral paints.  Traditionally detailed cast iron railings have been reintroduced on the street frontage to replace those that were removed during the war effort.  The rear elevation was re-pointed using lime mortar.  An ugly linking building was demolished and replaced with a contemporary structure incorporating an external spiral fire escape that descends into a timber clad security enclosure.  The building remained fully occupied and operational during the building works.
