Alex McClellan
Architect
Alex joined John Coward Architects in 2021 and works directly with clients throughout the design process. Her role spans concept design and feasibility work, planning and Building Regulations, through to contract administration and compliance monitoring once a project reaches site. Her experience covers both commercial and domestic work through multiple stages of design and construction.
Before joining John Coward Architects, Alex worked for an award-winning London practice on arts and cultural venues, including auditoriums and music studios, as well as offices and large-scale residential developments. She is particularly interested in cultural and publicly accessible buildings, the relationship between architecture and heritage, and how historic buildings can be adapted for modern life. She describes her approach as an honest expression of built form and the careful use of good materials.
One project she is particularly proud of is the Fire Station Auditorium in Sunderland, which created a new cultural venue for the city’s cultural quarter. She is equally proud of the more everyday part of practice: helping clients realise the ideas and potential they have for their building or home.
