Mountain View, South Cumbria

Mountain View was commissioned as a new dwelling for a local family. Located in the South Lakes, within the Lake District National Park, the house is a replacement of a dilapidated 1930’s bungalow.

The family became really engaged in the design development, making it clear that the new house should be modern, energy efficient with a strong relationship to the surrounding ancient woodland.

The property features a generous ground floor open plan living arrangement in which all the primary living spaces open out to external sitting and dining areas and the wonderful woodland to the rear. Other accommodation includes an art studio, utility rooms and storage. On the first floor,  3 double bedrooms a family bathroom and a master suite featuring a changing room and a large ensuite.

The design set out to create a modern take on traditional Lakeland forms and materials, integrating local walling stone and slate with oak and copper cladding panels and modern, high performance, glazing systems.

The design team at JCA are strong advocates of sustainable design and were keen to implement and encourage, a balanced approach to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.  The embodied energy associated with the construction of the house was reduced by reclaiming the walling stone and the roofing slate from the original house and incorporating it into the new design. The combination of high levels of insulation,  the installation of ground source heat pumps and solar panels, ensures that the property minimises its day to day energy use whilst also helping to reduce running costs.

The completed project has been a real success in accommodating a family in a new energy efficient modern house, making the most of its sensitive woodland setting.
