Inside the Final Stage of Architectural Training
Isabella Robinson reflects on the final stage of her route towards registration as an architect, undertaken alongside her work at John Coward Architects.
“This year, I have been undertaking the Part 3 PGCert in Architecture and Contemporary Practice at Manchester Metropolitan University while continuing my experience at John Coward Architects.
“Part 3 is the final stage on the route towards registration as an architect. The course has given me a much greater understanding of the legal, contractual and business responsibilities that sit alongside architectural design and project delivery.
“Over the year, I have completed my written examinations, my Professional Practice Experience submission and a case study based on a listed building restoration project I have been working on at John Coward Architects.
“Using one of our own projects for the case study gave me the opportunity to look closely at how a project develops in practice and to reflect on the architect’s responsibilities at different stages. It also allowed me to connect what I was studying directly with the day-to-day responsibilities of working on a live project.
“I am now approaching the final stage of the course and preparing for my Professional Interview examination.
“Completing Part 3 will be an important milestone for me. I’m looking forward to finishing my studies, applying for registration as an architect and bringing the knowledge and experience I have gained through the course into the next stage of my work at John Coward Architects.”
