Will Norris

Senior Architectural Technologist & Associate

Will is a Senior Architectural Technologist and Associate at John Coward Architects. He joined the practice around 13 years ago as a Junior Architectural Technologist and now works across the full development of a project, from early meetings, concepts and planning through detailed technical design and construction. Clients are likely to work particularly closely with him as a project moves into its technical and on-site stages.

In his words, his role is about making the design work. That means resolving waterproofing, fire safety and Building Regulations; working closely with structural and electrical consultants; checking that specified materials are used on site; and helping clients and contractors deal with defects through to completion. His experience covers domestic, commercial, conservation and historic buildings.

Will’s approach has also been influenced by hands-on site experience. After beginning an architecture degree, he chose to spend longer in practice and in design-and-build work, including time “on the tools”. That gave him a strong understanding of the difference between drawing something in the office and making it work in reality, including the ramifications for construction and cost. It strongly influenced his move toward the technological side of architecture.

He has a particular interest in conversion, retrofit and refurbishment: improving the efficiency and comfort of existing buildings while respecting their fabric. He is also preparing to undertake Passive House designer training, with an interest in improving thermal efficiency in both new and existing buildings.
